Program Description
Graduates of the M.Ed. in Literacy program emerge as leaders and advocates for systemic improvements in PK-12 interdisciplinary literacy instruction. Learners explore the nuances of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and broader skills such as digital and media literacies. Through data-driven decision-making, they apply evidence-based practices rooted in the science of reading to identify literacy gaps and enhance curriculum. Gained skills include assessing student literacy needs, evaluating literacy program effectiveness, collaborating with stakeholders, and leading literacy professional development at school and district levels.
Program Outcomes
- Develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based literacy instruction and intervention plans. (AO1)
- Utilize theories, academic standards, and frameworks to guide the selection and application of literacy strategies for emerging, struggling, and advanced readers. (AO2)
- Design developmentally appropriate literacy curricula to improve learner equity, promote social responsibility, and foster academic achievement. (AO3)
- Apply digital media tools, online resources, and assistive technology to enhance literacy skills and support data-informed decision-making. (AO4)
- Engage in leadership and professional growth opportunities for continuous improvement within the literacy field. (AO5)
Mission Statement
The mission of the Masters of Education in Literacy is to provide professionals working with students and teachers in PK-12 settings with skills and content knowledge to support literacy and reading skills across populations.
