IRB Submission

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for reviewing the scope and intent of student research to make certain research subjects are treated fairly and responsibly. IRB approval must be granted by a majority vote prior to collecting data for the dissertation.
Application Form. Applications to the IRB are received throughout the year. Typical response time for exempt studies is 2 weeks or 10 business days. The IRB Application is available on MyACE Portal, Faculty and Staff Commons. The application can also be sent to any potential external researchers.
Application Materials. The following documentation is required for an IRB application:
- Complete research proposal (i.e. Chapters 1-3)
- All instruments to be administered
- Vita or resume for the principal investigator
- IRB approval from other agency or institution involved (as appropriate)
- Copy of all subject recruitment materials (e.g. flyers, emails, letters) (as appropriate)
- Procedures to maintain confidentiality at all stages of the research (as appropriate)
- Informed consent form(s), process and explanation of why loss of confidentiality is justified (if applicable)
- Description of any anticipated risks and justification of exposure to minimal risk level
- Details of planned compensation and procedures (if applicable)
- Description of benefits to participants, the discipline or profession, or the community (other than compensation)
- Explanation of data retention plans
- Details of any planned dissemination of results

If the proposed research meets all criteria and is approved by the Institutional Review Board, the lead researcher will be notified by email. If the proposed research is not approved, the lead researcher can revise and resubmit.
Notification of Change. It is the responsibility of the researcher to inform the IRB of modifications or changes to the approved proposal. These adjustments may not be implemented until approved as the IRB may identify these as substantial and request a re-submission of the application.
