Program Description

The M.Ed. in History Education program is designed for those teaching at the secondary or college level in the field of history. This coursework examines the major tenets of understanding historical traditions of thought by examining perspectives across time, people groups, and geographical locations. Utilizing critical thinking, the rationale and emerging patterns driving issues are traced to their roots in political, cultural, social, and ideological perspectives. The courses are crafted to integrate historical content and enhance teaching strategies while modeling intellectual processes essential for solving real-world problems. By generating critical analysis skills, learners examine the rationale and emergent patterns beneath issues, tracing the cause and effect to blend creativity with the practical. Attention is given to strategies to support personal change in thinking, reasoning, and decision making as they influence content, community, and cultural aspects of society.

Program Outcomes

  1. Assess contributions in the field of history by applying cognitive and psychological foundations to improve personal and corporate productivity. (AO1)
  2. Analyze theories and principles within the framework of history to develop methods for research and enhance the documentation and organization of critical elements within a discipline. (AO1)
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of industry standards and collaborative strategies by incorporating multiple resources and technological solutions to ensure the application of viewpoints and ethical reasoning. (AO4)
  4. Analyze how experts consider evidence to generate new options and foster a climate of mutual respect and support. (AO2)
  5. Identify critical issues in the field of history and explain their impact on communities, regions, and global concerns. (AO3)
  6. Promote skills in leadership through collaborative, data-driven decision-making to improve organizational function, contribute to the field of history, or engage in meaningful and relevant endeavors. (AO5)

Program Mission

The mission of the M.Ed. History education is to provide educators with a deeper knowledge of a focus in history and government.  Students gain understanding historical traditions by examining perspectives across time, people groups, and geographical locations.
