Program Description
The M.Ed. in Higher Education focuses on the critical knowledge and skills necessary to lead or serve in academic organizations in an ever-changing global, economic, and technological environment. Focused on evidence-based practice, the courses establish foundational frameworks in finance, legal, and governmental constraints; management of operations, academics, student affairs, and human resources; assessment and evaluation, and other areas essential to higher education. The program guides students in using data to inform and drive quality decisions regarding academic engagement, which support student-centric policies and processes. Designed to complement professional agendas, an integration of concepts prepares higher education professionals to navigate the complexity of systems influenced by modern societal issues.
Program Outcomes
- Compare key theories, concepts, and principles in higher education administration, leadership, policy, and research to evaluate their applications in institutional contexts. (AO2)
- Utilize evidence-based approaches to develop innovative solutions and strategies for addressing organizational, institutional, and societal needs in higher education. (AO1)
- Exhibit leadership and management competencies necessary for effective administration and governance within higher education institutions. (AO5)
- Design and implement effective student success initiatives, academic advising programs, and support services that enhance student retention, engagement, and achievement. (AO3)
- Analyze higher education policies, laws, and regulations at the local, state, and federal levels and evaluate their impact on institutional practices and student outcomes. (AO4)
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data relevant to institutional effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and programmatic assessment in higher education. (AO4)
Mission Statement
The M.Ed. in Higher Education program prepares innovative and ethical leaders to further increase access to education. Through evidence-based research and critical analysis, students address issues in postsecondary education, manage positive change, and explore policymaking.
