Program Description

This program prepares professionals to design, develop, implement, and evaluate effective online instruction using evidence-based learning, assessment, and evaluation approaches in diverse settings, such as K-12 education, higher education, and government, corporate, or other professional development settings. Learners apply curriculum and instructional design theories, frameworks, and ethical principles to create learning experiences suitable for their profession. Learners gain the skills to perform quality assurance for online course content, accessibility, and universal design. Throughout the program, learners use digital tools and technological resources to build an ePortfolio showcasing their expertise in course design and digital media.

Program Outcomes

  1. Employ theories, frameworks, and models of instructional design for effective online learning environments.
  2. Apply collaboration and communication skills to create and evaluate online courses and projects.
  3. Demonstrate ethical applications of emerging technologies by creating original, accessible, and inclusive learning environments.
  4. Utilize digital tools to design, implement, and evaluate innovative learning activities that leverage data-informed decision-making.
  5. Develop a growth mindset to become a leader in learning design, adapting to evolving trends and technology.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Instructional Design and Educational Technology program is to provide practitioners with the skills to develop, implement, and evaluate effective instruction through technology.

Focus of Study Options


Adult Education and Corporate Training

This focus of study prepares professionals to design impactful online learning experiences for adult learners in higher education, government, corporate, and other professional development settings. It provides learners opportunities to apply frameworks, theories, and strategies for instruction and assessment of adults.

K-12 Educational Technology

This focus of study prepares educators to serve as technology leaders in the elementary or secondary learning environment and emphasizes new ways of thinking about technology and integration in the classroom. Candidates acquire the knowledge and skills to support learning with technology, lead educational technology professional development opportunities, and offer technical assistance to other educators.
