When IRB Review is Needed

The vast majority of the applications received by the ACE IRB are from students. Thus, this IRB handbook is written from a student’s lens. Having said that, ACE fully supports its faculty and staff who wish to conduct research. If you are a faculty or staff member or someone external to ACE, please review the following sections to best understand how your processes relate to the processes listed in this handbook.

Submission Process

ACE Faculty and Staff or External Researchers:

ACE faculty and staff conducting research under the auspices of American College of Education are required to obtain IRB approval for their research. Additionally, if ACE faculty and staff wish to conduct research at American College of Education (research including any ACE data, students, employees, etc.), they are required to obtain site approval from the College. Faculty and Staff should follow the following steps:

  1. Download and complete IRB application (note: the link takes faculty and staff to a research area on the Training and Development site. External researchers should contact [email protected] to obtain a copy of the application.)
  2. If needing site approval (conducting research at American College of Education), the researcher should send completed IRB application and overview or proposed study to the Chief Academic Officer (CAO).
    1. The CAO will review, communicate and involve any other departments if necessary, and issue a decision: denial or conditional approval (approval to conduct research at ACE pending IRB approval)
  3. Submit IRB application and other required documents (proof of CITI training, conditional site approval, etc.) to ACE IRB via email to [email protected]
  4. ACE IRB will review and issue the final decision.

These researchers will submit their IRB application, proof of CITI training, and other approvals received (i.e. IRB approval outside of ACE).

Research Policies

All research policies apply to all ACE students, staff, faculty members, and anyone external to ACE approved to conduct research at ACE.

When is IRB Approval Needed?

IRB review and approval is needed when individuals wish to conduct research or when individuals are conducting research under the auspices of the College.
